Experimenting with Color on Polymer Clay

I just recently purchased a couple of sets of Pan Pastels to color polymer clay.  I love it.  In this experiment, I created a leaf shaped pin with purple colored wire buds and applied several green and yellow Pan Pastel colors to raw clay with a soft paint brush and then cured it.  The Pan Pastel is very durable as it did not easily scratch off.

Once cured, I used purple Prismacolor colored pencils to add layers and depth of color.  Finally, I added some gold embossing powder to the edges and a bit sprinkled on the main piece to add a metallic tone and add texture.  I like the way it turned out.

This was my first time using the Pan Pastel and so far I'm very impressed with how it works on the polymer clay.  I'll be doing more experiments to test its durability and coloring abilities.

  1. I purchased a tutorial from Iris Mishley and was introduced to pastels on polymer. It is amazing! Love what you created. I tried the prisma color pencils but found it difficult to get much color on the clay. Maybe I will have a go at it again!

    1. Marian, do try again with the colored pencils. I apply two to three layer to get good coloration.

    1. Lupe, thanks. I was surprised I couldn't easily scratch off the Pan Pastels. I used the PP on raw clay and then baked.

  3. Did you seal the pan once you finished adding your colors as a final product? And if you did what kind of sealer is the best to use for polymer clay?

    1. Sorry for the late reply, this was stuck in moderation for some reason. Yes, I use a matte sealer - Krylon spray or Varathane brush on. I like Varathane as a sealer with polymer clay. It comes in a variety of finishes like gloss, satin or matte - be sure its water based whatever you use. BlueBottleTree does a really good review of sealers at this url http://thebluebottletree.com/varathane-best-polymer-clay-sealer/ Thanks for watching.

  4. Beautiful! Could I ask what you used to seal it?
Hope I'm as good as you some day!

    1. Hi. I used white Sculpey Premo! for the base. It took the color beautifully. I think any white clay would work. I'll be experimenting on other colors in the future.
